Started in 1998 as a meeting place for readers, Amsterdam's ABC Treehouse and her industrious volunteers developed an art gallery plus community meeting place.
We began with weekly lectures on New Age topics (Venus Evenings) as well as author presentations, Open Mic nights, book clubs and the Thanksgiving Semi-Potluck Dinner. In 2004 we stayed up all night waiting for the US election returns.
After the landlord's bankrupcy, we have lost our lease. Back in 1998, we rented the space because there were few places where book lovers could meet for lectures, but it's a new world now.
Although we'll no longer be renting spaces, the plan is to host author and other ABC events in the store itself and with partners elsewhere.
The ABC Treehut in The Hague will still rent spaces for events.
Thanksgiving in Amsterdam
The Thanksgiving Dinner will continue just across the street, courtesy of our good neighbors.
