ABC Meets: Jean Kwok, author of Girl in Translation

We predict that Jean Kwok’s debut novel Girl in Translation will be one of the biggest hits of 2010

It has a knock-out combination of a great story and real writing talent, plus Kwok’s tireless grass roots and mainstream promotion which  has lead the book all the way to Oprah’s favorites and the bestseller lists, almost before it was even published!

The novel is based on Jean’s own experiences as a Chinese immigrant in America: Eleven year old Kimberly Chang and her mother move from Hong Kong to Brooklyn, with little knowledge of the language or culture of their new home. Held back by the people who are supposed to help them, stuck in a cold and derelict apartment, and trapped in a job in a filthy sweatshop that never pays enough no matter how hard they both work, the odds are stacked against them.

But Kimberly has the abundant love of her mother, and outstanding intelligence. She uses these gifts to live a double life – prestigious school by day and sweat shop and tenament by night – that she hopes will release her small family from poverty.

Girl in Translation is an authentic, witty, touching and beautifully understated novel that reads like the work of a long-established author.

We are delighted to welcome Jean Kwok to our Amsterdam store on Thursday June 17th to talk about her story and to read excerpts from Girl in Translation. Afterwards there will be a question and answer session and book-signing.
