Spike Lee will visit ABC Amsterdam on Monday December 13th to sign his new book.
Spike Lee is an American film director, writer, producer and actor in films such as She’s Gotta Have It, Malcolm X, Mo’ Better Blues, and the Hurricane Katrina documentary When The Levees Broke. Recurring themes in his overtly political work are race, poverty, crime and media, and how these play out in the urban environment. His production company, 40 Acres & A Mule Filmworks, has produced over 35 films since 1983.
Lee’s 1989 film Do The Right Thing is perhaps his best known work. It was nominated for an Academy Award for best screenplay, was deemed “culturally significant” by the U.S. Library of Congress, and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry, as well as gaining cult status and perpetual popularity (it reached a pehenomenal rating of 98% on RottenTomatoes.com.) with critics and the public. It has also been credited as being the film that brought Barack and Michelle Obama together on their first date.
Now a new book has been published to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the film’s release. Spike Lee: Do the Right Thing is an insider’s look at the film, with behind-the-scenes visuals and interviews and a look at the way the film impacted on popular culture.
Spike Lee will be at the Stadsschouwberg in Amsterdam as a guest of The John Adams Institute and Binger Film Lab on December 14th, to talk about his work, politics, race, identity and inspiration. This event is sold-out.
However, the evening before, on Monday December 13th, Mr Lee will be at The American Book Center Amsterdam to sign Spike Lee: Do the Right Thing. Come along and get your copy of the book signed, from 6-8pm.
All you need to attend this event is a copy of the book. We’d appreciate it if you’d sign up for the event though. It’s not compulsory but it really helps us to make these events run smoothly. And the more smoothly our events run, the more big names we can bring to Amsterdam for you! As an added bonus, we can keep you all informed of any changes to the event. (And we promise only to use your e-mail address for good. We won’t spam you or sell your details to someone else.) You can reserve your copy of the book on the sign-up page too. The earlier you reserve your copy, the more certain you can be that we’ll have enough copies for everyone.
The event starts at 18.00 but you might want to think about lining up earlier than that; first come first served!
Our usual book signing rules apply : Please do not present anything other than a copy of Spike Lee: Do the Right Thing for signing. ONLY the book will be signed. Scraps of paper, items of clothing, posters, or body parts, no matter how attractive, will NOT be autographed.
