Our evening with Stephen Fry

Last Thursday, June 30th, we had a visit from a very special guest. One we’d been looking forward to for quite some time.

Everyone who waited so patiently in line, and hit re-dial so many times in order to get tickets to our evening with Stephen Fry knew they were in for a treat, and we weren’t diappointed.

Stephen arrived late, the pre-event dinner proving far too ‘gezellig’ to leave on time. Once he arrived, Mr Fry started talking and didn’t stop for about two hours.

Those were two very entertaining hours in which he covered his love of Apple and Oscar Wilde, his misspent youth, being gay, Lady Gaga, and also showed off his excellent grasp of both the Dutch accent and Dutch grammar by greeting us in our native language, calling us ‘Amsterdammetjes’, and showering us with his favorite Dutch swear words. He was the epitome of self-effacement, loquaciousness and charm.

For those of you who couldn’t make it to The Singelkerk last Thursday, and everyone who wants to re-experience the pleasure of hearing this lovably funny and erudite man hold forth seeingly unstoppably, we’ve posted videos on our YouTube channel.

You can read reviews (in Dutch) of the event in the NRC and Het Parool online if you missed them in the July 1st analog editions.

Our photos are available on our flickr stream. It’s lovely to see so many of your smiling faces!

Thanks to everyone who came – your enthusiasm and good humor made a special event unforgettable!
