Bookbits for August 18th, 2015

  • Shackleton's Journey - William Grill Buffalo Soldier - Tanya LandmanAwards!  Just before my summer vacation, the always excellent Carnegie Medal and Kate Greenaway Medal were awarded, for children’s book writing and illustration, respectively.   The Carnegie went to Buffalo Soldier by Tanya Landman and the Kate Greenaway to Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill.  Our Jesse is thrilled about the latter, because “the book is by Flying Eye Books, of which we stock many in the Illustration section in Amsterdam. It’s a beautiful book!”
  • R.I.P.  Historical and inventive fiction luminary E. L. Doctorow died at the end of July, aged 84.
  • Atlas Obscura's Obsessively Detailed Map of American Literary Road TripsWhy not make your next US trip a literary road trip?  Atlasobscura.com has made a handy literary road map for you already.
  • Apparently this self-published title can make any child fall asleep.  Forgive me for being a bit skeptical; doesn’t every book make a child fall asleep if you make sure you read to them every night and have made it a part of the going-to-bed ritual? Or am I just lucky to have the one kid that did? 🙂
