ABC Schools Program

English Books for Dutch Kids

Kids need to learn English in the modern world. We have lots of experience matching kids with books, so we gladly offer schools and parents the following to help them choose the best books.

Kinderboekenweek - Children's Book Week 2018, October 3 to 14

This year's theme is Friendship and here are our titles to complement and support English teaching activities taking place at Dutch primary schools throughout this week. Our 2018 titles have once again been chosen by Tatia Gruenbaum, Founder of The Little English Library project.

Suitable for children aged 4-8: Blue Chameleon by Emily Gravett
"A funny story about shapes, opposites and finding your friends. He can turn himself into anything and appear to fit in anywhere, but it seems that neither the swirly snail, the green grasshopper nor the stripy sock want to be friends with the blue chameleon. Will he ever find someone to talk to? Someone just like him?" (Pan Macmillan)

Suitable for children aged 7-9: Up and Down by Oliver Jeffers
"A penguin has wings for a reason . . . doesn't he? Having a best friend with his own airplane is one thing, but actually experiencing what it feels like to fly by himself? Here is one penguin who believes this is precisely what he needs to feel complete. Only . . . if flying by himself is so wonderful, then why does he feel so empty? Because some experiences are better shared. (And penguins are much happier on the ground.)" (Philomel Books)

Suitable for children aged 9-12: Imaginary Fred by Eoin Colfer & Oliver Jeffers
"Did you know that if the conditions are just right, and if you add a little electricity, or magic, or luck, that an imaginary friend might appear just when you need one? An imaginary friend like . . . Fred. Fred is the best imaginary friend you could ever hope for, but no matter how hard he tries, the same thing always happens: his friend finds a real friend in the real world, and Fred fades away, bit by bit, waiting to be wished for again." (Harper Collins)
