I find this novel absolutely beautiful, but also mysterious, amusing, and really touching.The children of Dorimare’s capital, Lud-in-the-Mist, are taken away by Fairies to Dorimare’s neighbour, Fairyland, where laws are absent and life is
celebrated to the full. Meanwhile, menacing Fairy Fruit is smuggled into Lud. Underneath layers of fantasy and myth, the reader finds a discussion of various political and societal themes from the 1920s (the decade in which this book was first published),such as class and gender struggle; the book’s fascinating
layers are as obscure as the elusive Fairies that appear in it. I not only recommend to read the novel for the story itself, but also for the beautiful, poetic language Mirrlees
uses.
