This is a photo book about Havenstraat and Karperweg in Amsterdam. This was one of the last fringes within the city. Unfortunately, the area was cleared on March 6, 2024 and will soon be demolished.
It was an area with metal sheds and, above all, many interesting people. The special thing is that it was actually located in the city, on expensive land. The photographer Daniel Nicolas followed the area and the people who lived, worked or practiced their hobby intensively for two years. He had complete freedom almost everywhere to photograph whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted.
There were all kinds of companies, artists, hobbyists and a number of people lived there. Companies such as: Gideon Italiaander with 2nd hand items, harpsichord builder Klinkhamer, beer brewer Butcher's Tears, a special effects company, a garage, a bicycle maker, a scrap iron farmer, a party room, a clothing outlet, the museum trams were restored there and, for example, films and series were also shown there. recorded like the Mocro Mafia.
This is the definitive document of a place and an era, but especially of these people, and a way of life, that will never return.
It is a beautiful memory for the city, but not only that: It is also an ode to all these types of places that disappear for the same reasons. This is currently very topical for Amsterdam because everyone had to leave the area on March 6 and it received a lot of attention in the press.
The book was presented last April 5, amid great public interest (160 people), in combination with a photo exhibition, at KarperK on Karperweg 41, Amsterdam.
