This is the story of the marriage of Lotto and Mathilde, told first from his perspective and then from hers.
If my description of the book is simple, the story really isn't, as there are many strands and aspects to Lotto and Mathilde's lives. They all get treated with care (if not in a linear fashion). You will gasp when a puzzle piece clicks into place here and there, and turn back to earlier in the book to check how the other experienced it.
Groff's writing is feverish, somehow, but WOW does it work. I don't know anyone who can pin down unsettled moods and clashing feelings quite so well, and I fell into this novel headlong and unreservedly and am mourning the fact that I've finished it now. It's intense and strong and I highly recommend it.
