Amsterdam is one of the most photographed cities in the world, but until the 1970s mostly in black and white. Marit Kout and Aad Windig, however, collected color photographs of the city. Mostly amateur shots, often found in attics, online, discovered at an antique market, or rescued from the dump.
This rare collection spans a period of about 20 years. They are all amateur photographs and slides from hobby photographers, tourists and day-trippers. We see a vibrant city with lots of activity, but without the many tourists of today.
A unique colorful look at the post-war city. Many photos in this book were taken by visitors from the United States. In addition to the tourist highlights, they also photographed everyday life in Amsterdam. A milkman on clogs, a flower man, coal ships, tugboats, a man with a handcart.
