A New York Times and Washington Post notable book, and one of theFinancial Times, St. Louis Post-Dispatch,Slate,Mother Jones, The Daily Beast, and BookPage's best books of the year
An instant #1 New York Times Bestseller, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage is the remarkable story of a young man haunted by a great loss; of dreams and nightmares that have unintended consequences for the world around us; and of a journey into the past that is necessary to mend the present. Here Haruki Murakamione of the most revered voices in literature todaygives us a story of love, friendship, and heartbreak for the ages.
This novel by Murakami was the first Murakami novel for me.
I was pleasantly surprised by his style of writing: it is quite 'dry' word-wise, but full of delicate and philosophical concepts.
I'll be glad to read another novel by him.
The Story:
Tsukuru was once part of a group of five friends, when all of a sudden he was rejected by all four friends. They no longer wanted any contact with him, and he never knew why.
Now that Tsukuru is starting a relationship with Sara, he has an incentive to find out the reason, so that he can leave his past behind.
Traveling to several cities in Japan, and to Norway, he confronts all his friends one by one about their shared past.
He discovers what caused the riff between the group of friends, and also finds out the sad truth about one of them.
