In his life, Edward Gorey had up to six cats at a time living with him as companions in his New York apartment and his home on Cape Cod. His illustrations of his feline friends' personalities and quirks were a common topic of his art, even culminating in Gorey lending his imagination to the book jacket and interior illustrations for "Old Possum`s Book of Practical Cats" by T. S. Eliot. These cats, who can be found knitting, napping, balancing, and even flying, fit right in with the rest of his anthropomorphic animals and Edwardian eccentrics.
