I have read quite a few of Anita Shreve's novels, always enjoying the intricate personal stories she presents to the reader, and this one, situated in the late 1940's, is no exception.
Grace Holland survives a fire along the Maine coast, her house burnt down, and she struggles to survive with her two young children. Her husband Gene, a controlling and unhappy man, cannot be found, so she has to fend for herself, find a house, find a job, and take her destiny into her own hands.
With delicate descriptions of Grace's interactions with new friends, salesmen and employers, you will start to feel a bond with Grace, and hope for a good outcome.
Anita Shreve's very last novel (she died earlier in 2018) is a terrific example of her ability to write detailed, moving stories, with a great emphasis on the female psychology.
