Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

The Shining + Doctor Sleep: these books were real page turners, particularly the latter, I couldn't just put it down. I felt like I was deeply immersed into the dark/gothic and supernatural landscape that King seems to draw so beautifully. The characters, the story, in general everything was delivered so perfectly that I was really sad when I finished reading the books. Needless to say, I read both books within a week.

My first King was The Shining. I always loved the movie, but this is a totally different ball game.
The depth of the characters are amazing. Doctor Sleep, the follow-up to The Shining, is different but Danny is so wonderful as a grownup, trying to fight with his demons and in the end come out on top. Wow!

Interesting to read this book again after its follow-up Dr. Sleep. Now it becomes clear how destructive this story is without anything resembling a happy end or redemption. This is a beautiful take on how Jack Torrance breaks down and completely unravels, pulling his family with him to the darkest of places in the Overlook Hotel. Not only scary, but psychologically very insightful.
